Why we need to Cut, Cap and Balance

Last fall, you sent me to Congress to make a difference, and to get our fiscal house in order before our country faces irreversible economic consequences. I came to Washington in January thanks to your support, and I am fighting every day to achieve the things you asked of me: to tackle our government’s addiction to spending, get government out of the way, and create jobs to get our great American economic engine roaring again.

Fighting for You in Washington

The Prioritize Spending Act of 2011

Last year, you supported my campaign because you believed that real reform had to take place in our government, and I’m thankful to be in Washington, fighting for you.  When I was elected, I pledged to work every day to put Central Floridians back to work by getting our fiscal house in order, reducing our debt and finding responsible solutions to our spending problems.

I truly believe that America’s not broken, Washington is.  Our addiction to spending has become a roadblock to the American dream, preventing us from revitalizing our economy and creating jobs.

You’ve likely been following the current national debate regarding the debt ceiling. Like most Americans, you are probably concerned about the consequences that will result if a deal is not met by August 2, 2011. Though I’m hopeful that we will be able to work together to find a solution that cuts spending without raising taxes, I have realized that we must have a plan in place should that fail to happen.

That’s why I introduced a bill two weeks ago to help us prioritize our spending in the event that a deal is not reached by August 2nd.  Though I will absolutely continue to fight for a common sense solution, I believe we need to have a plan in place to protect our economy, our military and the programs that need funding immediately if Congress cannot reach a resolution before the deadline.

The bill I introduced is called the Prioritize Spending Act of 2011, also known as H.R. 2402. If passed, it would immediately put the following priorities in place should the debt ceiling be reached:

The bill states:

  1. We will pay our debts to prevent default.
  1. We will pay the active duty American service members who defend our country.
  1. We will pay Social Security and Medicare Benefits to seniors.
Though I wish that this backstop proposal were not necessary, political pandering and inaction have delayed real spending reform in Washington, DC. I’ve introduced this bill because I believe it’s important to send a message to our creditors, our military and our seniors that the United States Government will keep our end of the bargain.

With your help, we defeated Alan Grayson last fall and arrived in Washington in January to begin making a difference. Since then, I’ve discovered first-hand that Washington has a spending problem and needs courageous action from courageous public servants to enact reform. Did you know that we are currently borrowing 40 cents out of every dollar we spend? I think that’s outrageous, and that has to change.

I’m committed to fighting for real solutions to our spending problem, and I believe we can find those solutions while upholding basic principles of honor, integrity and courageous leadership.
