Recap of the First 30 Days

I have the great opportunity to serve Central Floridians in Congress and hit the ground running to turn off the spigot of spending and change the way business is done in Washington.

Some highlights from the first 30 days:

  • We voted to repeal the unaffordable federal health care bill to reduce new spending by $2.6 trillion over ten years.
  • Recognizing that we live in a paperless world, we passed legislation to end the mandatory printing of bills and resolutions to save Americans an estimated $35 million over ten years.
  • We made significant moves to reduce spending to 2008 levels or less.
  • We also passed a bill to terminate taxpayer financing of presidential election campaigns and grants for national party conventions, saving $617 million.

Hardworking families and individuals across Florida are cutting back, making sacrifices and reprioritizing their budgets.  I’m doing the same with my Congressional office by not accepting the federal health care plan and cutting my office budget by 5 percent.

When it comes to transforming the way business is done in Washington, the House Rules Committee, of which I am a member, has allowed C-SPAN cameras into the committee room.  This gives the American people a seat at the table to hear the conversations that take place in this committee.  When it came time to consider the health care repeal bill, the House Rules Committee was open and transparent for the full 12 hours of debate.

That is just the first month. We can do more and we will do more. Please join me in the fight to turn off the spigot of spending, create long-term jobs in Florida, and transform the process in Washington.
