Congressman Daniel Webster is hailing the passage this past week of the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act which requires states to obtain documentary proof of U.S. citizenship and identity in person when registering individuals to vote in federal elections.

Webster, a Republican who represents The Villages, co-sponsored the legislation.

“It’s simple, only American citizens should have a voice in American elections,” said Webster. “An honest and secure election is a hallmark of our republic, with the right to vote serving as a privilege and responsibility for American citizens. By requiring identification and proof of U.S. citizenship for voter registration, my Republican colleagues and I are taking a common sense step to strengthen election integrity and restore trust to our election process.”

The SAVE Act also requires, states to remove non-citizens from existing voter rolls and would hold election officials accountable that fail to uphold proof of citizenship requirements. The bill provides an extensive list of options states may use for proof of citizenship, including the same documentation that is already used to obtain a REAL ID.
